Choose the Best Kettlebell for Your Needs
The best kettlebell for you may not be the best for another person.
Users are known to get very attached to their bells. They tend to
become a part of the household. So choosing a kettlebell is a bit of
a personal matter. But here is some guidance on how to choose the
best kettlebell equipment for your needs.
Choosing the best kettlebells involves several things:
- the weight
- handle design
- handle thickness
- the kettlebell color
- materials of composition
Here we will look at each in turn.
Weights
Kettlebells are traditionally measured in poods, an old
Russian unit of measure equivalent to 16 kg or 36 lb. The traditional
sizes of kettlebells are one (16 kg/36 lb), one-and-a-half (24 kg/53
lb), and two pood (32 kg/71 lb) kettlebells. Since the kettlebells
began to gain in popularity in the West, smaller and larger sizes have
been introduced. You can now buy kettlebells as light as 2 kg (4.4
lb) and as heavy as 48 kg (106 lb).
Which weight is right for you depends on your present level of fitness
and your history with strength endurance activities. Which weight is
right for starting is also dependent on whether you are male or
female.
If you are a male who keeps active but who is not used to lifting
weights, a 16 kg kettlebell is a good place to start. If you have no
history of significant physical activity over the past year, start
with 12 kg. If, however, you perform muscle-building exercises of
significant weight regularly, you might start with a 20 kg bell,
possibly even 24 kg.
Females who keep active but do not lift should start with an 12 kg
bell. Those with no history of regular exercise in the past year
might start with an 8 kg kettlebell. If you keep active and are used
to heavy weight-bearing exercises, you could start with a 16 kg
kettlebell.
When choosing a kettlebell, always go conservative on the weight. In
general, you want a weight that will allow you to do 20 kettlebell
swings in series but no more than 30. Do not push yourself to make
the 20 repetitions!
Kettlebell workouts challenge your heart and muscles in ways seldom
touched by other forms of activity. So there is no shame in using a
lighter weight at first. You can always go up, but you can damage
yourself severely if you try to take on too much too soon. As usual,
check with your doctor before undertaking such an endeavour.
If you are in rehab, be especially conservative in your choice of
weight. Too much weight results in bad form. Bad form creates room
for injuries. Best to start very light (or with no weight at all) and
allow your body to get used to the movement.
Handle Design
When choosing a kettlebell, you must also be careful about the design
of the kettlebell itself. Of course, kettlebells are basically just a
cannon ball with a handle. But the size and geometry of the handle
can make the difference between doing a kettlebell exercise or not.
A kettlebell handle should have a slight arc to it. In the main, it
is not advisable to buy a kettlebell with a heavily-angled handle for
your first bell. A trapezoidal handle strains the wrists and can
result in poor, uncontrolled gripping. A good handle for the beginner
should curve to allow one-handed grips to center more naturally and to
allow two-handed grips to be done without wrist strain.
The handle should definitely be wide enough for two hands to fit
without your outside fingers being crunched down the inside. This
would lessen your grip and reduce your ability to use the kettlebell
safely.
Handle Thickness
Most stores do not keep a wide selection of kettlebells for
examination, and the thickness of the handle is perhaps the hardest
aspect of the kettlebell to estimate when buying online. How thick or
thin you go depends on your size and stature. If you are particularly
slender, you do not want to get a thick-handle kettlebell. Similarly,
too thin a handle will be hard to hold properly if you have
particularly large hands.
The best way to estimate the thickness of kettlebell handles online is
to compare pictures of same-sized weights. Cast iron kettlebells of
the same weight will always be the same size. If you are shopping for
a 12 kg kettlebell, open up pictures of the various options and look
at the thickness of the handle relative to the size of the weight.
Kettlebell Colors
The traditional colors for cast iron kettlebells are black and grey.
This is natural given the material and the fact that kettlebell
workouts are not competitions in aesthetics. The iron is usually
coated in order to protect it from rust.
Some cast iron kettlebells come fitted with acrylic jackets around the
weight itself. This provides a standard iron handle and protects the
bell from chipping. The acrylic coating, however, is typically only
available on lighter weights.
Some manufacturers (in particular, York) produce wholly acrylic
kettlebells. This is meant to protect the bell and provide a better
grip. In practice, however, some users have complained of cuts from
the plastic seam on the underside of the handle. If you use these,
therefore, weight-lifting gloves are in order!
Kettlebell Materials
Kettlebells are traditionally made from cast iron. The iron is
melted, poured into a cast, and allowed to cool. It is then sealed to
protect the iron from rust.
Modern kettlebell materials run from rubber to gunshot to water.
Rubber kettlebells help to protect you from injury should the bell
fall. Some manufacturers produce kettlebell shells that are then
meant to be filled by you with steel pellets or water (depending on
the design). The virtue in using these is that they can be
underfilled and are therefore adjustable.
Finally, there are adjustable kettlebells that use standard weight
plates spread across a central bar. This allows for more customised
increases of your lifting weight. However, these will be a bit louder
in use and do not have the flat bottom that traditional,
non-adjustable kettlebells have.
The Best Kettlebell
Which kettlebell is best depends on your environment and your ability.
These considerations will help you narrow the field from the plethora
of options. Ultimately, the best kettlebell is the one that you use.
There is no sense in buying a kettlebell only to leave it in the
corner.
