Fitness Workout With Kettlebells

A fitness workout means all-around fitness for most people. Kettlebells are not always used. But, time has shown that the best exercise equipment is the simplest to use without consuming large amounts of space. The best fitness workout therefore helps you meet the five components of physical fitness, and that is where kettlebells come in.

A workout routine for fitness, as opposed to strength training or to burn fat for weight loss, is widely advised as the best way to hold off ageing and age-related ill health of various sorts (e.g., cancer, heart disease, etc). Essentially, you want to ensure you tick all the boxes of the components of physical fitness. For this regime, then, we go through those components and address how to meet each one.

Note that it is assumed that you do a sufficient amount of warmup exercises before you begin this workout.

Flexibility

To build flexibility, one must naturally undertake good stretching exercises. For stretching exercises for fitness that also relate directly to kettlebell workouts, see that discussion.

Cardiovascular Fitness: Swings

Cardiovascular fitness is built through low-load, high repetition sets that last longer than 90 seconds. For this, the kettlebell swing is the recommended cardiovascular exercise. Because the bell has its own base level pace, there is a minimum rate at which the exercise can be done. This ensures your heart rate is kept high. Because the movement also compresses your lungs, your respiratory system is forced to become more efficient at oxygen uptake.

A good base from which to work for swings is 30x3 - i.e., 30 repetitions done 3 times. Once you have gained some stamina, you can increase this. At a total of 200 reps, consider adding more weight.

Muscular Strength and Endurance

Truth be told, when it comes to building fitness strength and muscular endurance, you can get by with the swing for a long time. Each rep of a kettlebell swing works the following muscles:

And this does not include the sundry muscles your body uses for balance and control.

For the rest of the exercises in this section, the goal is muscular endurance with a good amount of strength. If you would rather have less endurance but more strength, reduce the reps and increase your lifting weight. The number of sets should stay more or less the same.

Cleans

In addition to the swing, kettlebell cleans work the trapezius, deltoid, and tricep (among other muscles). This is often used as a precursor to a press, but it is a good exercise for strength in its own right.

When doing presses, start with 2 sets of 10 reps for fitness strength. Fewer reps require more weight and build more strength. Here we are just trying to maintain what you have.

Deadlift

The deadlift is an excellent back exercise. Through its use of the lower back, it also calls your abdominals into play. See "Muscle and Fitness" for more on muscule antagonists.

Two sets of at least 10 repetitions are in order for a good, healthy back. Be careful to watch your form and ensure that you don't overdo it on the weight.

Box Squats

For the lower extremities, box squats are in order. Box squats primarily exercise the quadriceps and, through negative lifting, the hamstrings. However, the abdominals and good core strength are necessary for good technique including keeping one's back straight throughout the exercise.

If you do this without weight, you can do sets of 30. With weight, you should do 10-15 reps per set. Do at least two sets, preferably three.

Body Mass

One's body mass is controlled by ensuring caloric intake is used up in daily activity. Otherwise, it turns to fat (see "How We Burn Fat"). Getting the balance right is where fitness nutrition enters in. Slight increases in activity often do not work as well if they are not accompanied by changes in diet.

To balance your intake with your outflow, there are several strategies. For some with already healthy diets, it is enough to simply increase their activity. But a workout routine that is not matched by nutrition is typically ineffective. Some others close to their desired weight often find counting calories to suffice. For still others, more drastic dietary changes are necessary.

The intake of carbohydrates that then turn to fat is usually to blame. One must balance one's energy needs to one's intake both in calories and in timing. Too much sugar too quickly results in highs and lows that lead to cravings and break one's dietary regime. This is a notoriously difficult balance to strike, and most people find that they tend to overeat eventually. For this reason, many weight-losers who are far from their desired weight find help in slow-carbohydrate diets like this "slow-carb" diet. The release of energy is timed effectively by the use of high-fiber foods.

Accomplishing Fitness

This workout routine is best done at least twice a week. You should not have to do it more than five times a week to maintain a good level of all-around fitness. If done with sufficient intensity, 2-3 times weekly will keep you in good shape.

Physical fitness is popularly seen as the ability to have an all-round level of moderate physical ability. This fitness workout is designed to achieve that. If you want more, you should consider what kind of physical fitness test you want to pass and look into strength training. If even this workout is too much, then you need something simpler, like the kettlebell basic workout. One exercise, two sets, twice a week, for two weeks, and you will be on your way to fitness.
