Womens Fitness
Womens fitness and nutrition differs from men's fitness about as much
as the two sexes differ from each other. Both fall
under "fitness and
nutrition", but, as in many aspects of society, the popular
understanding of fitness - what it means to be fit, how strength is
demonstrated, etc. - has been dominated by the way these questions are
answered among men. To be fit as a woman, however, is fundamentally
different. Here we look at what women's fitness rightly means and why.
Popular Understanding of Being a "Fitness Woman"
From a young age, women tend to take on a torturous mindset when it
comes to their bodies. This is particularly true in the English
speaking world but is increasing in non-English speaking cultures, as
well (e.g., the Latin cultures of South America). Women tend to have
self-image issues. In one study:
- 90% of women were dissatisfied with their appearance
- 75% thought they were overweight
- 90% overestimated their body size
- 70% wished they were thinner
With results like this, it is no surprise that 89% of all plastic
surgery is performed on women. Most women have a distorted view of
what a healthy, natural female body is. This distortion tends to err
toward being more like Barbie, the line of children's dolls, and is
commonly called the "Barbie Body" syndrome.
The "Barbie Body"
The "Barbie Body" idea of fitness is characterized by the desire to be
longer and leaner. Women want thinner legs, smaller waists, and
larger, more buoyant breasts. The reason this distortion is so
unhealthy is that the proportions of Barbie are virtually
unattainable.
Computer-generated models have shown that, if Barbie were a real
person, she would weigh 110 lbs (50 kg) and stand 5'9" (175 cm) with
measurements of 39-18-33 (99-46-84 cm). This is not only contrary to
the average woman but is also contrary to what a healthy body should
be. In contrast to the above, the average American female is 5'4"
(163 cm) and 140 lbs (63.5 kg) with measurements of 35-28-38
(89-71-97). Medically speaking, 110 pounds is the ideal weight for a
woman of 5'2" (157 cm) height. A woman of 5'9" (175 cm) ideally
should range in weight from 129-170 lb (59-77 kg), depending on body
type and musculature. The models showed that "Barbie" would have too
weak a back to support her upper body. Further, because of the size
of her body, she would have a liver half its normal size and would
scarcely have a few inches for a bowel. She would consequently have
chronic diarrhea and would die of malnutrition. And this is often a
woman's first source for what their body should look like.
The Model Model
After Barbie, however, the problem perspective is compounded by
clothing models. After all, the average model is around 5'11" and
weighs 110 lb. If they can do it, why can't everyone? Because only
5% of the worldwide population is naturally able to have such a body.
The average model is thinner than 98% of Americans. She is a size 2-4
when the average American woman is a size 12-14. Such models are
20-40 pounds under a healthy weight for their size. There are two
primary reasons for this:
- Very slender frames do not detract from the clothes they model. Rather, the clothes hang on the body like a frame.
- Photography adds at least 10 lbs onto a person's physique. Therefore, you need to be quite thin in order to appear slender on camera.
The fact is that a model's physique is unrealistic and unsustainable - even for most models.
Men and Women Are Different
Finally, the conception of male fitness has dominated fitness on the
whole for some time. And this is very much to the detriment of women.
Due to their hormones and general physical make-up, men are able to
sustain 4% bodyfat without health complications. And women have been
expected to do likewise.
The Basic Problem
The problem is that bodyfat plays a major role in immunity and the
body's lymph system. If a woman drops below 12-14%, critical body
systems will start to shutdown with significant results:
- osteoporosis may occur
- musculoskeletal problems can arise
- menstruation will cease
- infertility will occur
- birth cannot happen
- breastmilk will dry up
Consequently, for a woman to reduce to 4% bodyfat opens her to a wide
array of health problems.
For optimal health, a woman needs a minimum of 14-16% bodyfat. Beyond
ensuring the basic functionality of the body, an additional 2-4% of
body fat beyond a base of 12% helps to buffer internal organs and
protect the body in general. A certain amount of fat is natural and
healthy. For many women, however, this body fat is seen as a bane
because it tends to accumulate in certain key areas:
- thighs
- buttocks
- hips
- breasts
- uterus (abdomen)
The natural accumulation of fat in these areas serves to illustrate
that women are supposed to have curves. However, too much can be a
problem, too, and can cause:
- high blood pressure
- type 2 diabetes
- high cholesterol
- various female cancers
- gall bladder disease
- coronary heart disease
- osteoarthritis
Lose the Right Kind of Fat
So the obvious solution is to burn
fat, but you need to lose the right kind of fat. For this you
need to realize what fat you can change and which you shouldn't worry
about. There are two basic kinds of fat.
Essential Fat
Essential fats are those around essential areas like your spine,
heart, lungs, brain, liver, mammary glands, and uterus. For most
women, this fat makes up around 12-14% of their body weight.
Storage Fat
The second kind of fat is storage fat. This provides cushioning for
internal organs, insulates against the cold, and gives energy when
necessary. This is the fat that you can loose first safely. Included
in this category is cellulite.
Cellulite
Cellulite is (storage) body fat that is stored under the first layer
of skin. It is stored under the skin in small packets that then push
against the epidermis. This problem is more prominent among women
because women have thinner outer skin than men. It has been found
that men who have lower testosterone levels tend to have thinner skin
and consequently have problems with cellulite.
How Much Body Fat is Healthy
Lean muscle requires more energy of the body; so it causes you to
burn more fat by increasing your metabolism.

The precise range of body fat that is right for you, however, depends
on several factors. First, as seen above, women require more body fat
than men. Second, older women have more fat due to muscle lost in the
ageing process and due to their naturally slower metabolism. Third,
greater activity begets the need for less fat, so it is no surprise
that athletes will always have less fat than more sedentary women.
Finally, a very small percentage of the population is genetically
predisposed to a larger percentage of body fat, and this can be
healthy for them.
To figure out which body fat percentage you can expect for your body
type and activity level, see the stats below:
- <17% : Athletic
- 17-22% : Lean
- 22-25% : Normal
- 25-29% : Above Average
- 29-35% : Overfat
- 35+% : Obese
Obviously, being overfat or obese is not optimal. Getting into the
leaner categories requires
burning the
fat off through diet and exercise.
